Nestled in the heart of Meru, Kenya, this series captures a day spent at a small local school run by my best friend’s mum.
A dusty playground. The hum of lessons drifting through open windows. Laughter bouncing off painted walls.
Their curiosity was endless, their joy infectious, and their mischief, impossible to resist.
Between games and lessons, I raised my camera, capturing the sparks of personality in every glance and grin. And when I handed the camera over, their faces lit up — tiny hands learning to frame their world, eager to see life through a new lens.

The Termite Test
She stands at the centre, wrapped in a green jumper and navy hat, her wide, steady eyes meeting the lens with quiet defiance. A child’s hand hovers above her, mid-motion, while other children blur into the background — laughter and movement framing her calm, unflinching stare.
In her mouth, a termite. For her and her classmates, these tiny creatures were trophies of the afternoon — caught with quick fingers, celebrated with squeals of delight, eaten without hesitation. To me, it was a dare. Their chants grew louder, their joy uncontainable, until I too gave in, becoming both subject and participant in their game.
This photograph, later showcased in a gallery, holds more than a portrait. It is a story of roles reversed — where I became the student, and the children became the teachers. A shared lesson in courage, curiosity, and the playful mischief of childhood.
